I finally have an interview for a real job, to define real, I mean a job that actually will train me and use the knowledge that I have gained though education and experience in the workforce. I'm applying for a computer programming job, and my (hopefully) new boss has given me a phone interview, which went wonderfully.

Now he wants to met with me over lunch in a few days. I'm kind of worried about what I should wear, since I've never actually been interviewed for this type of position. Any suggestions?

FYI, I’m not trying to spend a LOT of money, but I can buy some new clothes.

so you have a lunch date. YOu want to dress more casually than a office interview or a group interview. I would wear a sports coat with no tie. Or, go to a store and buy a simple kind of coat and wear a dress shirt underneath with no tie. Honestly, you cant overdress. But just know that you're appearance is like 78% of what he will think of you. BE clean shaven and comb your hair. I did some stuff in school about interviewing. Appearance means a lot. Always look him in the eye while speaking and make a good impression. Don't ask too many questions and be open to any questions he may have. Plus, practice some questions like "What makes you different than anyone else? What do you think you'll bring to our business?" Stuff like that, those are the tricky ones. Be prepared so that you answer quick, or with very little hesitation. Plus, I would try to make him feel comfortable around you...then he'll feel that he will want to hire you because he "likes" you. Good luck

Slacks, dress shirt, tie, and jacket are best for any type of job interview. It shows that you are a professional.

If you can't afford to go buy new, try a local thrift store. You would be surprised what kind of clothing you can find at the Goodwill or Value Village. I have found men's clothing that is almost brand new. Then you can take your items and have them dry cleaned and they will look like new.

Good luck!

wear a nice suit or nice shirt, tie and pants. Try H&M - last time I was there they had nice suits for a lesser price. Target even has some - just make sure they fit properly - no baggy pants and have them sag. You also may want to contact the company and ask what their dress code may be but always dress nicer and look CLEAN - comb your hair, blow your nose, check your teeth for any food bits. I've interviewed some individuals who literally did not care what they looked like. Use what you have and update it with a nice shirt and tie.

If you're not comfortable in a suit, wear a nice shirt, dress slacks and maybe a sport jacket (looks like a suit jacket, just a little more casual).

Put yourself in the position of the one doing interviews.....how would you like to see someone dressed? Most importantly, remember to maintain eye contact, smile and be confident!

Congratulations! If you're on a budget then I would dress conservatively and that means a white shirt with a solid-colored tie (blue, black) and dress slacks with a belt and dress shoes. If you can wear a sports coat.
If you can afford it you can get a decent suit for $150-$200 at Men's Warehouse or JC Penney.
I wish you well!

For computer programmers, generally dress shirt, slacks and definitely a tie. If it's management position, wear a jacket. Stick to basic colors: light blue shirt, matching tie, black slacks. NO loud colors! Leave that for after you get the job.

as long as you have a buttoned down, collard, white dress shirt and slacks with a pair of leather dress shoes you will be okay and make sure to bring your resume on the way so they can have it in front, they always like that. Good luck :) Also I forgot to add when you are at your interview, try to relate with them. that always works for me

Don't just talk the talk, walk the walk. Dress nice, first impressions are important..You don't need to try to outdress the guy, but you need to look professional.

if you don't have a suit, which would be best, wear slacks and a nice button up plain shirt
