It's your lucky day when questions are asked about Metal and I'm around... If you are going for popularity and trendiness than of course Lacuna Coil and Type O Negative, they are great though... But here is a slew of bands that are a little less known and a shiteload better...

Leaves Eyes, Tristania, Trail Of Tears, Sirenia, Sins Of Thy Beloved, To/Die/For, Sinamore, Entwine, Theatre of Tragedy, Crematory, After Forever, Angel, Darkseed, Evereve, The Gathering, Lacrimas Profundere, Savior Machine, Moonspell, Paradise Lost, Ram-Zet, Virgin Black, Agothodaimon, Mandragora Scream, Within Temptation, Lullacry,
Slumber(Sweden), Octavia Sperati, Katatonia, Dimension F3h, Stream of Passion, Adastreia...

I could go on with hundred's more but this should keep you busy for quite awhile...! You're Welcome... \m/

umm..for straight up metal i'd recommend some Soilwork, Bullet For My Valentine (although they're a bit more metalcore/post hardcore), In Flames, Lacuna Coil, (lol, i just relaized three of the last 4 bands i posted are gothenburg style metal) Becoming the Archetype, Trivium, Children of Bodom, Devil Driver, Satyricon, Between the Buried and Me, Lamb of God, The Agony Scene, Killswitch Engage, and i think thats enough to start, and for a more "gothic" sound...Burning Witch, Cathedral, Eyehategod, Saint Vitus, Dream Death, Candlemass, Pentagram
