Maybe you are misunderstanding the role of government. Thomas Paine was said: Society is produced by our wants and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness positively by uniting our affections, the latter negatively by restraining our vices...

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil... were the impulses of conscience clear, uniform and irresistibly obeyed, man would need no other lawgiver; but that not being the case, he finds it necessary to surrender up a part of his property to furnish means for the protection of the rest.

That means to me the government is needed to even out the needs, wants of the people, Therefore it is necessary for the government to be the conscience of the people, and supply the needs of the many equally to us all. If left to each individual person then there would only be health care for the rich.

To some degree, it is in the interest of all members of a community to keep everyone healthy. For example, if you have an injury that keeps you from doing your job, it might be to the advantage of the government to provide some care to you so that you can go back to work, earn money, pay taxes, etc.
I think it's all a matter of how many needs are served for how many people. We don't want the governent to go broke taking care of the uninsured, either.

Every other industrialized country has national healthcare. The only reason we don't is greed. We need to let go of the fear of communism and start to help others.

we don't have to. it's only our american pride and standing in the world that is at stake.

free market incentives waste waste more health care resources than up and running government programs ( the VA for example ) do.

national health care, like national defense, is a program better handled by the government.

you have to be an idealogue not to see the truth in this.

I could be really cynical, but, I'll try to use common sense.
If the poor contract a contagious disease & cannot afford to
be treated, eventually, it will spread to everyone.
For example, no one paid attention to Africia & look what
happened with aids.
When you refuse to take care of your own, there will always
be a consequence waiting to happen.

Why is this "supposedly" great country so far behind other industrial countries when it comes to taking care of our own. Why do we get less paid vacation, less heath care, less childcare, etc. We're supposed to be #1....but I think we not even on the charts.
