i guess to be more clear....I have some files that I have downloaded(legally) that are "protected files" and I can't put them into my edit program.

I wish! There probably is some bootlegging freeware out there somewhere... at least it will be free for like 7 days, and then cost you $99 and then it will break. The microphone is external, so I know that isn't the answer you are looking for.

Advanced MP3/WMA Recorder is a good program. It records any sound played through your soundcard. Also has filters to tweak different ranges of sound and you can select the output format.

Oh yeah...there is a lot of software out there. For more professional software, try Adobe Audition: http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/ . For free software try google/yahoo for Windows Sound record Wav. Windows used to include the "Sound Recorder".

Go to http://acoustica.com/mixcraft/

It's great, they give out a free 7 day trial and it's like a giant 99-track recording studio.

i have tried doing that, its possible but the sound quality isn't that great. there's a lot of adusting you need to do with the position of the speakers and microphone stuff but it still isn't worth it that much. good luck
