It really depends on what company & what your experience is and the specific position. Also it depends on your geographical location.
Steve & Barry's would pry be less than the others cause they are a smaller company.
I started in retail management with a midwestern department store and they pay their starting managers 27,000 to 30,000. But I have seen and heard of as low as 23,000 for smaller specialty mall stores. You just have to figure what is the lowest amount you would work for and give them a range. They will make an offer and if it is not in that range you can counter offer. I just did that with my new job and got 2000 more than the original offer. I would reccommend your asking range of 28,000-32,000 for a starting position. Again depending on your experience. If you have experience ask for a range in the higher 30's. I think that the other answer of $43 is high, and not typical.
Good luck to you!

When I worked at walmart, they made a salary starting out of about 43k. For somewhat smaller stores, i would guess starting out about 30k or so. Not too shabby and you can always move up in the chain to a branch manager, etc.
