actually its a chip you stick in your laptop, but it has a phone number, just as a regular phone would, so the satellite can track it and connect to it. you can use the number as an actual phone, but mines from sprint and i think it would charge me a dollar a minute to use the number as a personal phone.

It really depends on the phone and your carrier. Some phones require a cable to connect to the laptop, others can connect via Bluetooth. Off the top of my head I can't make a recommendation as to which phone to use. I did this in the past with a Motorola V551 though. It also depends on your carrier. Some don't mind if you use the phone as a modem while others strictly prohibit this type of use. In my experience it's simply not worth it to go through the trouble of making sure you have the right plan and phone. If you really need mobile access you'd be better off buying a data card and plan.
