Is there a way to delete the recycle bin icon from my desktop?

Download Tweak UI from Microsoft. This program allows you to control the windows interface in great detail. There is an option under Desktop preferences to unselect Recycle bin. You can also do this by modifiying a key in the registry but that is obviously not recommended as you dont want to screw something up in the registry.
