Rats are not a difficult pet to take care of. They eat rat food which you can get at a pet store and live in a cage. You must be sure and clean their cage about three times a week to prevent the cage from smelling. Rats won't bite you (unless maybe you have been handling food so make sure to wash your hands, or if you startle them) but they might pee on you.

The only issue is that rats are night animals so they may keep you up at night running on a wheel etc.

You CAN train rats but it takes a lot of patience and dedication!

I suggest you go and ask someone who works at the pet store about it!

They get a bad rap because of the history behind them, usually being carriers of disease. However that is wild rats, the type that you would get in a pet store are free of disease.

rats are pretty easy to take care of, and you can train them.
They stink if you dont clean their cage regularly. And each rat can have its own personality.

I personally have not owned a rat but have friends that have owned many rats (rats, mice, gerbals, snakes, all sorts of stuff)

The are cheap and good for a starter pet.

Good luck!

A Rat? They stink if you don't clean their cage every so often. You also have to make sure their water is clean and they have a good nutritious meal. They are nocturnals. Therefore, they are more active in the night than in the morning. If you're planning to keep it in your room, make sure you can sleep with the noises. It depends on which types of rat you by. They're just like humans. They all have their own attitude. If you have time, get one. If not, I advice you to make use of your time instead.

You can buy one cheap from some pet shops. They get a bad rep' because in the wild they go through rubbish for food and spread infections. But if you look after it you will be surprised. It won't stink and isn't any more difficult than a hamster.
What their personalities are like I don't know, you might want to look round the pet shops (I don't recommend you capture one 'cause then it will stink).
Good luck

Rats can make great pets. The rep has to do with wild ones, because they carry so many germs. They can have a bit of a smell to them. So you will need to keep the cage very clean. Changing the litter twice a week, can help with the smell. They are very smart and can make great pets. I have had several. Good luck.

Rats are great pets. They live off pizza crusts and stale beer. You need a cage with cedar chips and shredded news paper, change weekly. Rat needs a water bottle, you can buy it with the cage. It's been my experience that you want to buy the rat when it's small. Pet stores that sell snakes are a great place to buy rats. In the mall they call the Rats "pet quality" and charge you more. A rat is a rat. Don't let anyone B.S. you in to thinking else wise. Handle your rat often and don't trip if it nips you in the beginning. Rats are way smart. It will learn not to.

My daughter has a rat...he's cool. She plays with him, he does little tricks. He doesn't stink because she keeps his bedding clean. She also has 3 cats and 2 dogs, and they don't seem to bother him.

Go to a pet store and talk to the people there about raising rats. I'm sure they can help you.

i had a fancy white rat who i called societies,he was a very good pet, very intelligent, with very good manners who loved to be held and cuddled, its not very hard to take care of these little guys,in fact they are a lot more friendlier than hamsters and if you keep their cage clean, they should never smell bad, however it is recommended that you bath them ever so often and they care very little if you bath them, yes they can be trained, mine thought his name was kitty since he heard me calling the cat, also they like to be gently tossed on a pillow, they will keep coming back for more!.all in all a fancy rat makes a very good pet as well as a friend and if i am not mistaken can live up to eight years or so.

I used to own a rat she was really cool, they are some what trainable. They do not stink if you clean their cage out once a week. Mine was really nice she would climb all over and sit on my shoulder and cool stuff like that. The disadvantage is they do not live very long. Good luck

Rats are not as bad as people think.
They are clean, not hard to take care of. You just have to clean out thier enclosure once a week.
They are quite tame, not sure if you can train them, but they definatley do have personality.
Good for someone who does not have a lot of room in thier house.
A good pet store will be able to answer all your questions
