Cello is actually a shortened version of Violoncello which is italian. "cello" is a diminutive.... which is why it should really be spelled : 'cello, with an apostrophe. So it is a diminutive of "violone" which means "big viola" in italian. Diminutive means that it is just saying "little". So add "cello" to certain words in italian and you are saying little-whatever.
In italian "Cello" is pronounced "Chello" as in the popular alcoholic drink "limoncello". I'm sure the rest of your class didn't know any of that so really they're just as clueless. don't let it get you down.... Learn how to play the cello and laugh about it. In my opinion its the most beautiful sounding instrument there is!!

In Italian, the C has a CH sound. Cello has an Italian origin.

I remember in spanish class I once pronounced the word Pie (spanish for foot) as "Pie" as though it were a pastry instead of "Pee-ay" as you would in spanish. It was a little embarassing.
