It doesn't help anyone; very likely, this talk of english only is just a distraction from all the things that congress ought be doing.

There has to be a primary language. And in the US that language is English. There is nothing wrong with immigrants speaking their own language or teaching it to their kids and others. But we cant have everything printed in different languages. Other countries only print and perform business in their language. If you want to live in a country other than where you were born then you need to learn their language not the other way around I don't care who you are!

why should everyone learn spanish or another language by force when the country they live in is english speaking? people are free to speak whatever their native tongue is, however, if one moves to a country that speaks a certain language, then the newcomer should adapt and learn the language of the land. in this land it is english.
while being mulit-lingual is a benefit to the user, it doesn't change the fact that each country has a main language and no other country has bent over backwards to accommodate so many other languages as the u.s. has.

Not at all. A language is a method to communicate. Effeciency in understanding each other improves with comonality of language. Just look up the story of Babylon in the Bible to get the extreme example. Nothing advances in a society that doesn't have a clear base language to work from. I understand what you mean though, and to your credit, diversity is also necessary for advancement and betterment (for lack of a better term) of any society, but a common language must be there .

Without disparaging the value of speaking multiple languages, I can think of 2 reasons offhand for politicians to support English-only mandates:
1) economics - if you support multiple languages, you have to provide services and printed material in multiple languages and that's more expensive than being unilingual.
2) it creates a more homogenous society and encourages assimilation by all comers. Supporting a multilingual society leads to fragmentation of that society - just look at the English/French tensions in Canada if you doubt me.
Yes, there are many close-minded and stupid people in America (and other countries, too, but they seem less likely to elect them to public office) but the English-only supporters aren't focusing on them, they're trying to push the non-English-speakers to learn English and participate fully in American life rather than to ghettoize themselves in all Spanish/French/Mandarin/Urdu communities.

Why is it such a big deal to actually learn English? It wasn't an issue for our earlier immigrants who came to this country - why is it now an issue? Those earlier immigrants had no problems in attempting to assimilate to the predominant culture in it's language and culture - why should the immigrants of today be allowed to not assimilate themselves into modern American society.

we shouldn't be forced to learn it to accomodate other people cuz in America we speak English. Sure it is valuable, but no one should be forced to learn it. I don't think it is being closed minded if you don't wanna learn itt, it should be an individual decision.
