If you know that you can't add them because denominators are different, then try to see if you can make the denominators to be the same.

If you know that a fraction can be written differently by multiplying any number to both the numerator and denominator, then you can visualize that the two fractions can also be written as
for 5/18 are 10/36, 15/54, 20/72, etc.
and 7/12 are 14/24, 21/36, 28/48, 35/60, 42/72, etc.
Then, you will be adding 20/72 and 42/72 to get 62/72 = 31/36.

If you are a normal human beings, you will not like the above method to find the common denominator, 72 in this case. So, you should learn how to find the lowest common multiple (LCM) of a set of numbers.

Alternatively, if you hate LCM and are not phobia of big numbers, then you can work with the obvious common multiple of the numbers 18 and 12, which is 18 x 12 = 216, i.e. add 12x5/216 and 18x7/216 = 60/216 + 126/216 = 186/216 = 31/36.

And alternatively, if you prefer working with fraction, then make one of the denominator to be the same as the other:
5/18 = (5*2/3)/12, then it will be (10/3+7)/12 = 31/3/12 = 31/36
or
7/12 = (7*3/2)/18, then it will be (21/2+5)/18 = 31/2/18 = 31/36

5/18 t 7/12= multiply the numbers to get a common denominator.

5/18 x 2/2= 10/ 36 and 7/12 x 3/3= 21/36, then add these together.

10/36 t 21/ 36 = 31/36

5/18 + 7/12 = 31/36
First find a least common denominator. 18 = 2 * 3 * 3, 12 = 2 * 2 * 3. The l.c.d. has factors 2^2*3*3= 36.
Rewrite each fraction as
10/36 + 21/36. Add.
