My opinion is that even though the white sox have beaten us 9 of 12 so far, they are 6 and a half games behind us. That tells me that The Tigers are that good, or the white sox are really that bad.

That lead is now 6.5, as the whinny sux lost today, and The Tigers won.

I am not worried

The Tigers still win The Central Division.

I wouldn't say 5 1/2 games is right on their tail, considering that the gap was only a game or two at the beginning of July and Chicago went through a major slump, but it's better than the 10 games they were down at the beginning of last week.

Chicago has now put some distance between themselves and the Twinkies, which will be crucial to maintain as those two play 6 games against each other in the next two weekends (3 at Minnesota this weekend, 3 in Chicago next weekend). And the series in Detroit next week is vital for the White Sox' chances, as they really need at least a split of the 4 games up there to avoid erasing the gains they made last weekend.

There's still a long way to go, but given the schedules the two play the rest of the month, I look for the gap to be down to 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 games by the end of August, as Detroit still has to go to Cleveland and New York after the series with the Sox, while Chicago hosts Tampa after the Twins' series.

Going into September, the Sox will have to become road warriors, as they have 18 road games (if you include October 1) to finish the season with only 10 in the Cell, while the Tigers have the reverse.

Baseball is a game of streaks. Consider how the dodgers lost 9 or 10 games in a row and then went on to win 11 straight, and 15 of their last 16. Right now, the White Sox are on a hot streak, and the Tigers are slumping. I still think the tigers will win the division, because their manager Jim Leyland has experience with this type of thing and get them straigtened out.

The White Sox will fade, and the Tigers will prevail. The White Sox will NOT make the playoffs as the wild card. That will be the Twins.

Chow!!

Well, a 5 and a half game lead isn't as good as a 10 and a half game lead. But it's still 5 and a half games. That's better than if they were neck and neck.

We're not even into September yet. I've got to love Jim Leyland because he's managed to keep this whole thing in perspective. A five and a half game lead is only good if you have five games left to play.

The Tigs just need to keep playing good baseball and try to put last weekend out of their minds. They got swept in Chicago and they still have a decent lead in the division.

But all of it really means nothing until later on.

The Tigers are going to start losing games. Their starters are young, so they have little experience throwing so many innings in a season. Soon they will be less effective and someone may get injured. Basically, the Tigers will still lead the division, but their lead will be a lot smaller.

This means you must be a Detroit fan.

Me, I'm thinking you should be happy with the incredible year over year improvement and getting to the playoffs. You didn't expect the ChiSox to just roll over, did you?

White Sox are the defending champs, they were bound to get hot. I don't know if they have enough to overtake Detroit though.
