Does it help that he's also majored in Economics* and in Pre-Med/Nursing* and that the History program he majored in was an Honors* program???

your chances are slim to none and the award : "Sara Ruth Prize for best history essay" is not gonna help you get in. never even heard of it

I'd say his chances are not so good. Stanford is ridiculously competitive, and a GPA of 3.78 won't help unless he came from an ivy league undergrad school. did he get any papers published? that would help... he should submit his essay that won the prize with his application. GRE scores are OK, not great, not enough to gaurantee he gets into Stanford. I would apply, but not get my hopes up. Apply to several schools, thats always the best way to go.

These credentials won't get your friend into a Master's program at Stanford. Forget about a Doctorate Degree.

good luck with that...its VERY hard to get into that at stanford and without a 4.0 gpa or any serious awards or accomlishments his admissions essay is going to have to hit hard on someone but even then his chances are very slim, probably none.
