Simple. When discussing how to get the cheese, the second mouse told the first mouse that "the early bird gets the worm."

First of all, WRONG CATEGORY.
Second of all, your analogy is flawed. The first saying is the early bird gets the worm, not the first bird gets the worm. From the word early, you cannot assume the first.
Third of all, the first mouse gets killed by the trap.
Fourth of all, there are plenty of "great" sayings that are conflicting. Some are exact opposites of each other. The reason for that is that language is based on human experience, NOT logic. Since when have humans ever thought or acted rationally. Things like language, law, relationships, and social interaction are NOT based on logic but rather on experience.

sounds to me like a smart bird could hang around a mouse trap...have a free lunch of mice bits and cheese. Sounds much better than the worm...unless he went fishing. Beware the cat since he laid the trap.....bird and mouse casserole..LOL

There's no risk to the bird in retrieving the worm as the first mouse is killed by the trap.

the first mouse overslept and forgot to set his alarm clock:( later the second mouse gets sick from food poisoning because the cheese had mold that the mouse overlooked & consumed.

Bird = Predator
Mouse = Prey
It is a matter of lifestyle and environment if you are to compare the two sayings. Predators must be swift, consistent and opportunist to survive. Prey conversely must be cautious and lucky.
