I find often when I go on a road trip you will drive for miles and miles without seeing ANY restaurants serving reasonably healthy food. Often I see a LOT of McDonald's, Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King, Wendy's, Carls Jr, Denny's, Del Taco, etc along the highway rest stops but not any places with FRESH and HEALTHY food. Perhaps next time I'll simply pack food bought from the grocery store and wait to get to the main city/town areas to buy more healthy groceries and find HEALTHIER restaurants. What are your thoughts on this?

its just a matter of habit. we are used to throwing good sense to the wind because "it is just this one time while i am traveling". let go of that mentality and eat good no matter what, even if this is the only time you will be at this place, or whatever.

I totally agree! I think it's mostly because eating healthy is so time consuming, and a lot more expensive no a days. We all just grab it and go. I've never really gotten into the whole fast food thing, accept when I was pregnant, of course.

I was obsessed with any candy made of Dark Chocolate, Burger King's Whopper, Taco Bell's Chalupa Supreme, McDonald's Big Mac, and Denny's Giant breakfast sandwich. I can't remember what it was called, but it had everything on it for breakfast........ ham, bacon, cheese, sausage, and egg, piled on a huge bagle/biscuit thing.

And now that I'm not pregnant, all I crave are salads, home cooked meals, and anything that my two kids like helping me cook. Even though home made tacos may not be that healthy, but they sure are fun to make and eat with your kids!!

That's mainstream American food for you, and I'm not happy about the lack of healthful options, either. I tend to prepare for this by making my own food to take with me, such as sandwiches (cut into quarters for easy handling while driving), nuts, grapes, granola bar chunks, yogurt-coated peanuts or almonds, etc. It's a lot cheaper this way, too, so you don't end up spending your money on garbage.

Another thing I often do is look up (on Yahoo Yellow Pages before the trip, and the regular phone book en route) names of restaurants on my route that might interest me. I love healthful Indian cuisine, and have enjoyed delicious Indian food in places such as Terre Haute, IN and Huntington, WV while travelling. You'd be amazed how accessible some of these places are right off the highway; you just have to scout them.

I think you solved your own problem!

However - when you go into a fast food restaurant (if you have to) - try the grilled chicken or the salads.

I have a road trip to take next year and with Type 2 diabetes now - I have to think of things like that. I never used to.

Excellent idea to pack your own stuff. And maybe get off the main road, where you have more chances of having decent food stores and purchase whatever is to your taste (some have "ready to go" meals, not exactly home made, but still better then fast food. Or stop at a deli. They too have good choices.

People find it easier to eat quick on the road, so that's probably why they offer so many unhealthy choices. Most people aren't too concerned about how healthy the meal is these days, but it's good that you are. They should offer more healthy restaraunts, and if they're not going to then they should offer healthier choices on the menus.

For me, it isn't an availability thing. There is something about being on the road--feeling carefree maybe--that makes me want to eat at greasy spoons and fast food places. So when I travel I tend to abandon good eating habit. Luckily, I don't travel that much!

It is hard because you might be stopping at yummy country diners, and getting hamburgers or something good like that! Or a tv dinner is easier to prepare than a a healthy dinner in an RV.

It annoys me that fast food restaurants ALWAYS get a bad rap. Has no one read the menu board?? There are salads, grilled chicken, fruit, milk, etc...Just make good choices.

The biggest resoan is the junk food is faster and cheaper to prepare for customers speeding on a long trip.

Also it has an easier grip time when driving.

A one handed meal.

Fresh ingredients cost more
Food prep is labor intensive and therefore costly...
Bring a thermos and a cooler and stop at the supermarkets, frequently.
