Yes, and George Washington is an example, in a way. However, he was an Englishman only in the sense of being born in an English colony, not in England. But Benedict Arnold was a real hero of the American Revolution, and only later was accused of betraying it. The accusation may or may not have been justified.
Courageous men do what they believe to be right, even when it runs counter to the government of their native land. Look at any repressive regime and you will find real heroes committing "treason" to save people, to fight against the corrupt government. Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Communist China . . . lots of examples in modern times.

Actually, no. George Washington considered himself independent of Britain. After years of being alienated by the "mother country," do you still think of yourself as a British subject when there is a war breaking out?
Robert E. Lee spent the night pacing back and forth deciding what side to take when Civil War broke out. Should he join Virginia, his native state in her cause of independence, or stay in the Union, as he was already general in the US army? You know what his decision was.
but you know, some war crimes are crimes when the side loses. If the Brits won the war, Benedict Arnold would not be called a traitor, even though he will still be hated for what he was: a betrayer. Even the Brits hated him for that.

Actually Britain betrayed us by exploiting us. Washington and the people rebelled, but never betrayed.
Bill Clinton was a draft-dodging traitor--no hero.
John Kerry betrayed the nation. But he's no hero. John Murtha betayed the nation and his Marine Corp. But he's no hero.
The Democrat Party betrayed us working people. And that's where the modern traitors come from. NO HEROES.

I guess it depends on who you ask and who you are asking about. A hero is defined by Merriam Webster as the central figure in an event, period or movement. In ethics courses "hero" has been defined as anyone that goes above and beyond what would be his/her ethical obligation.
If you consider that one has duties to people, and organizations other than a nation, then yes, someone can be a hero and have betrayed their country.

History is the opinion of the writer/victor. One man's hero could easily be another man's traitor.
