How can you tell the difference form a regular ipod & a video ipod just by looking at it? I went to a pawn shop & the guy said it was a video ipod but it was not charged so i couldnt tell. He says just because the ipod says video in the menu, but dont all ipods say video on the menu?

1) If it's black and about the size of your hand (maybe smaller) then it's a video. However it could also be a Nano. In this case look on the back. It should say 30GB or 60GB in a white box as shown in this picture. Nano's don't go past 4GB.

2) ONLY the video ipods say "video" in the menu but if it isn't charged there is no way to tell. The best way to check is to look on the back, only the video says 30GB or 60GB. However if for any reason you can't see it (it may be in a case) just look at the screen.

Here is a picture of an iPod (iPod photo ) the 20 GB ("regular iPods") look exactly the same except without color in the screen

Now here is an iPod video

The photo/regular iPods have round smooth corners in the front but the video is completely flat in the front (this is hard to explain with words and its hard to see it in the picture it's something that you have to feel) but the best way to check this is to look at the iPod from the side and the corners of the video are flat but the corners on the regular iPod are round. Here's the side view of the regular iPod (I know thats an older iPod but the regular iPods and the iPod photos look exactly the same from the side)

http://www.apple.com/r/store/gallery/ipod3/2.html

notice how the corner is round from the side view and then look at the pic from the iPod video (second link) you will notice that the side of the video is flat with no corners (again very hard to explain but just compare the sides of the iPods and you will see what I'm trying to say).

And the last way to be 101% sure that it's a video is to look at the distance from the screen to the edge of the iPod. On the video the distance is smaller then the width of a pencil (#2 pencil) . On the regular ones you can easily fit that pencil in there. And if your pinky is the size of mine then you can fit it in between the screen of the regular iPod to the edge of it.

MY ADVICE:
1) Look on the back Make sure it says 30 or 60 GB
2) Take a Pen/ Pencil with you (regular size). The Width of the Pen should be about the same size as the width of the iPod
3) The last way that I haven't mentioned is look on the top of the iPod. The Video looks like this http://www.ixbt.com/td/images/ipod-video-top-280.jpg (notice that it only has ONE head phone jack and a hold switch spaced far apart) Now here is the regular iPod (I know that this is a picture of the older version but the top looks exactly the same) http://www.apple.com/r/store/gallery/ipod3/images/6.jpg

notice that unlike the video it has a second headphone jack and everything is close together.

I hope the pictures help. And sorry that its so long.

Go to the apple web site, visit the iPod section and take a careful look at the different generations of iPods. The video iPods have larger screens than the previous generation - I have both a non-video (I think the 4g) and a video (5g) and you can tell them apart.
