I would personally not attribute their rudeness to hedonistic behaviour specifically. I attribute it to anonimity, which the web offers. It allows people to say things they normally wouldn't because of the social isolation an asinine answer would bring about in a group of people who are talking together in person. A fellow worker frequently says " them's fightin words" meaning that he's been insulted, and is willing to physically fight to defend his honor and or moral sensibility. The fact that they do it here instead of behaving in a more rational manner, as they would if they were physically among their peers, is that they lack the understanding that freedom requires responsibility. I meet so many people nowadays that believe that just because they have the freedom to do something, that freedom justifies the act. In other words, its O.K. if I don't get caught. It could be argued that my coworker suffers from another juevenile justification, that is, might makes right. Just because you could do something doesn't mean you should. I believe these attitudes stem from our focus in the last 30-40 years on the individual instead of on cummunity. For example, I could easily sleep with my neighbors wife. She has made it clear that anytime I want her, she's ready. there is no legal statute against it. If found out, however, it would devastate a family. It would put four children into the battleground of family court. Sadly many of my friends feel I'm a fool to not take her up on her offer (because she is a hot mom). If I only consider my own selfish satisfaction I would do it. However when I examine the damage it could bring about to others it is easy to say no. It is this failure of the "me" generations to consider their behaviour as it effects others that is sorely lacking today. Selfish yes, narcissistic definitely, hedonistic, probably. In my opinion it is the focus of the effects of our behaviour on others, and a lack of focus on yourself that creates a civilised society. Lastly, I would remind you, given your job and all that you see, that 90 percent of all crime is committed by 4-5 (Figures may not be exact but proportionality is close) percent of the population. Sadly your job focuses and concentrates on this small group. For your sanity, you need to remember that you have little contact with the vast majority of law abiding citizens, however rude they might be within this forum.

I think it's because of the anonymity they feel on here. It's not face-to-face interaction where they may feel more apt to use any manners they have been taught. They're at home, behind a computer and can let out their frustrations of the day on some other "anonymous" person in order to feel better. But, to be fair, some people ask some really stupid questions on purpose in order to get a lot of responses. They don't care if the responses are rude. They just want to see responses.

It's a problem with disrespect for other people's feelings and beliefs. These days children are being taught that the most important person is 'number 1' and it's ok to tell everyone else where to go... Things will continue to deteriorate as the media, video games and role models keep promoting this idea.

All of the above are good answers! It must be depressing to have your job,you must wonder if there are many good and decent people left in the world. Its getting scary out there, maybe people feel that, and are hiding behind smart mouth comments.

your probably onto something there. Its also true that alot of the rudeness comes from the fact that these cowards can hide behind the fact that nobody knows who is sending this stuff out. They wouldn't be anywhere near as bold if they had to have their true names/faces on the answers.

People feel very safe and comfortable hidden behind their computer. Many people talk allot of trash they would never say to someones face.
