Whether the author, Rev. Charles Dodgson (aka "Lewis Carroll") wrote it under the influence of drugs or not [I don't think he did], is not important. What is important is why he wrote it and what is was really about.
He wrote it for the sick/ill daughter of a friend. She was apparently bored with stories she had heard and wanted something different to read during her recuperation. So, in order to take here away from where she was stuck, he took her "Through the Looking Glass".
The book "Through the Looking Glass" is about quantum physics. And, as everyone knows, every new bit of information learned about sub-atomic particles is "curiouser and curiouser".

She went through the "looking glass" or a mirror which was why everything was backwards or the opposite...like when she was dying of thirst and was given a hard dried up biscuit to quench it. Good question! Great book! =)

The author wrote it when he was high. It's not supposed to make sense.
