It's non-drinkable to us, in many cases, because we aren't used to the bacteria, etc in the water supply. People from those countries have similar problems when they come here and drink our chlorinated water.

In terms on non-HEALTHY drinkable water, practically every third world nation (i.e. most of Africa, Southeast Asia, etc).

The question of fixing it is an interesting one. One of my relatives actually works for a company that installs water purifiers in areas with unclean water. He tells me that there are always several hurdles.

(1) Often there is not sufficient equipment in an area to support the technology of a water purification system. So not only must a company construct the system, it must also somehow create an infrastructure to support it. Costly and a long process.

(2) Often in these sorts of areas, the people are not well educated, or even trained in trade skills outside of agriculture or animal husbandry. So when the system goes in, the company has to train locals to keep the system working and the water coming. Training is difficult enough, now imagine adding a language barrier to the mix!

(3) In one of the saddest reasons of all, the governments of these regions can cause problems. Often they are very corrupt on the local level, and won't even deal with foreign monies without a little "gift". Then they make the legal paperwork extremely difficult to navigate, again harder than normal due to the language barrier. And even when the purification system is up, there is no guarantee the government won't simply "confiscate" the property and the system to milk their own people.

This is only a summary of some of the reasons that there are still so many countries that have non-drinkable water in areas. Fortunately, there are still some companies that keep on fighting.

Hope this helps

as long as people poop and piss in water that flows downstream into somebody elses drinking supply, nobody will have clean water. i live in the good old USA, and the water the locals expect me to drink is taken from a sewage treatment plant. Other countries either have it better or worse, depending on their population, technology level, industrialization level, etc. places like nepal where there is little industry will have cleaner water, though visitors will get sick for a few days at first. places like mexico and bangkok where there are industrial complexes but the water cleaning technology hasnt caught up have nasty water due to all the fecal matter. US cities have non drinkable drinking water. Im not a water snob, but ive had water without fecal matter in it for my entire childhood, so going to a water fountain in the city is only done if absolutely necesary. There are many reaons why people dont do something about the drinking water quality. some places are too poor to afford any filtering machines(africa, SE asia) and some places(USA) the government is in charge of it, so they do as little as possible. maybe get a guy with a fish net to scoop out the poo and toss it back in farther away from the drinking water system intake.

Many african, middle east countries don't have drinkable tap water. These are generally very very poor countires and the sheer cost of purifying water is beyond their government's means.

I know a place which has had it's drinking water completely messed up, the reason it's not being fixed i'm told is the government. stupid as some are, they believe that the countries finances are most suitable in another area.

Mexico, Most all third world countries. Because they do not have the financial resources to develop water treatment plants.
