I am 13 and going for my first gynecological visit...but I'm scared to death. What does the gynecologist do and what can I expect?

Ok everyone, the reason I'm going is not because I'm sexually active, I just have a really heavy period and when my mom called the doctor she was advised to make an appointment...that's all. I would NEVER do something like that at my age...

Nothing to be scared of sweetie...it's a little awkward, but not frightening...

They'll do a pelvic exam...you'll change your clothes and put on a hospital gown OR be given a couple of paper blankets to cover yourself...they will have you lie back on a table and place your feet in stirrups to help hold your legs up because your knees will be bent, and the doctor needs access to your vaginal area...

The doc will take a speculum (often plastic) and slide it into your vaginal canal...this holds the canal open so the doc can get a sample of cells from your cervix...when the sample is taken, it may feel a bit like period cramps (it does for me) but not bad, and it doesn't last long...

Once the doc has the sample, the speculum is removed...

That may well be it for a person your age...some docs also do a breast exam, but I'm not sure if it would be done to someone your age...

The whole procedure is a bit uncomfortable, but mostly just kinda awkward...if your doctor is male, a female nurse is required to be in there with him...if you are nervous, tell her so she can hold your hand or talk to you through the procedure...

It doesn't take long at all and is a good thing to be doing...try not to be scared, it's really not scary just kinda "blech"...y'know? :)

It's uncomfortable and akward, but its nothing to worry about(remember, your gynecologist does this all day, no big). They put on gloves and put an instrument(speculum) up there to keep it open while they take samples(feels like a pinch), if they do. they might draw blood, but nothing should feel worse than a bee sting.

A good gynecologist will warm up the dang speculum before they put it in there.

Ask lots of questions, remeber its YOUR body.

Don't worry. He'll ask you lots of questions to get your medical history. Be honest...they don't judge and it's the best way for them to get a good idea of your health. If they do an internal exam it's a little awkward and a little uncomfortable but they are usually very gentle and very careful. Usually they don't do one if you aren't sexually active and if you are only 13 you shouldn't be sexually active. Don't be scared...they are professional

Relax hon, in another year you will laugh at yourself for being so nervous. Being nervous could easily make it more difficult for you, the doctor simply wants to examine you, make sure all your parts are as they should be. He will insert his finger in your vagina to make sure your cervix is in one peice, and he will feel your uterus thru the vaginal wall to make sure it is where it should be. Then they will insert a small device called a speculum, (it's the same size as his finger) so they can look at your cervix with a light, and swab it for a specimen. It won't hurt. Just relax and do multiplication tables in your head. Ask the doctor to talk to you, and explain what he is doing each step of the way, made it less scary for me the first time.

Honey it'll be alright, it's done for your protection and to make sure your healthy. I go get a pap smear every year on my birthday. And I do it to also know i'm healthy. Just remember it's what we'll have to do from the time we become younger ladies until we become older women. :)

Keep your head up honey it don't hurt.
And remember it's for your health.

Take Care,
Stacie

I can tell you, honey, it's not going to be pleasant but you will have a nurse there to hold your hand. AND....even older women hate to go to the gynocologist. Just try to relax and be sure to tell the doctor/nurse that you are nervous and please tell you what will happen during the exam. They will do that for you. I'm not sure what you would be going for at that young age, but they will be examining your genital area and breasts and will keep you covered. Please talk to your mom, or aunt or another female you trust about this exam before you go and tell them how nervous you are about it. You have to ASK for help, dear. God Bless you.

Relax, first and formost. They usually are really nice because they know you're freaked out. Just be normal, they see stuff like that all the time...

Don't be scared. It is somewhat uncomfortable (the physical exam) but it does not hurt. Your doctor should tell you what he is about to do as he goes... If not, ask questions.

they're going to make you spread your legs. They'll poke once or twice... it's not as scary as it sounds, I promise. It will be over in like, 5 minutes.
