DHCP is short for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This service is usually assighened to a router, a protocol for assigning dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network. With dynamic addressing, a device can have a different IP address every time it connects to the network. DHCP also supports a mix of static and dynamic IP addresses.

DHCP is configurable to do alot of things. if you look in the DHCP options on a 2k3 server you will not only see the standard options sutch as ip, subnet, gateway, dns, but you will also see things like node type (broadcase,peer-to-peer, mixed, or hybrid)
DNS Domain Name, Root Path, Boot Server Host Name, Bootfile Name, Etherboot ID and probably about 100 others at least.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
If your computer is hooked up to another computer (or router) that is in controll of the network, then that computer (or router) will assign your computer an IP-address when you log on to the network. What IP that is is determined by what the settings for DHCP are.
