One glass of a not so strong wine.

I agree with Shiann (above). I occasionally had a glass of wine during my second pregnancy (although I must admit I was much more careful about avoiding alcohol with my first). As long as you limit yourself to one glass and don't do it very often, I don't see the problem.

When I had my first two, the doc most certainly said that was okay. (they're 17 and 19 now) By the time I had my son, the word had changed and pregnant women were advised to not drink any alcohol.

But this is the truth regarding alcohol and pregnancy:
- They know that binge drinking, even once CAN cause birth defects;
- They know that heavy drinking daily CAN cause birth defects;

What they don't know is at what point alcohol WILL cause damage, and it appears to not be consistent. Some alcoholics have healthy babies. Some can go on a bender and have healthy babies (and unfortunately I've known a couple of people who did this a number of times early in pregnancy and got lucky and had healthy babies). They just don't know at what point alcohol is definitely safe.

Most prohibitions against medications have to do with what they don't know, not what is known to be fact. Nobody wants to run tests on pregnant women for obvious reasons. That's why the rule of thumb is to not take anything you don't absolutely need. It's a benefit versus risk decision everytime you take anything, be it a beer or an aspirin.

So..is one glass of wine a day okay? Probably, but do you really want to take that bet? Pregnancy is just the beginning of many sacrifices you will need to make to be a good parent. If you aren't ready to forego that glass of wine to be sure your baby doesn't suffer for it, are you really ready to be a mom?

I know that sound s judgemental, but it isn't really meant to be. I'm just suggesting that you really need to take a good look at what is important to you.

You can, and probably should, talk with your doctor. I remember one incident with my first where I had something happen that spun me into a whirlwind of stress, and my doctor actually told me to have a drink. He said that being calm was better for my baby than me all stressed out. I also don't think one glass on an occasional night out is harmful, but a daily glass just seems self-indulgent. I gave up my coffee for every baby (and resumed as soon as I wasn't nursing.)

The good news is that a glass of wine or a beer when nursing is okay and beer can actually help you nurse better.

And the other question to ask yourself is how you will feel if your baby isn't perfectly healthy. The truth is that about 2% of newborns do have some birth defect. Odds are that if your baby isn't perfect your glass a day didn't cause it, but....... think about the guilt you will feel if you can't be sure of that; even if it's just a "maybe." Will you be better able to sleep at night knowing you did everything you could to provide the best possible outcome?

Anyhow..just food for thought. I wish both of you only the best.

The truth is that nobody really knows how much or how little alcohol can be consumed before it has an effect on the foetus. Besides, everyone metabolizes alcohol at different rates. What is known as fact is that there are some serious problems that can arise if certain levels of alcohol are taken on a regular basis (see below).

The current guidelines in most countries suggest that a maximum of one unit per day be consumed.

How do you measure a unit of alcohol

One unit of alcohol can be measured by:

A half pint (25cl) of beer, lager or cider

A small glass of wine or sherry

A single small measure of spirit or liquor

No, any alcohol will get to your fetus. Maybe a sip won't hurt, but a whole glass might be harmful.

Yes. Moderation is the key. Beer is also fine, but avoid liquor at all costs.
