Having been published, it goes like this:

Write the book, rewrite and polish. Make sure the grammar, spelling and punctuation are correct. Make sure the book is in correct manuscript format (you can get this off the Internet).

Do research on what companies publish the type of book you've written. Find which ones require and agent and which do not. If you have no agent, try the ones open to submission without agent.

Find out the submission requirements - inquiry letter only? Synopsis, cover letter and 3 chapters? Entire manuscript? Follow the submission guides exactly. (You can find out how to write a synopsis by looking on the Internet for sites and books on such things).

Send a copy of the manuscript or whatever they've required(clean copy, printed double-spaced on one side of the white paper in black ink). Add a SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope.)

Start working on the next story or book as the waiting time is anywhere for 1-24 months.

When/If you get the manuscript back, start again.

Do not go to Vanity Presses, subsidized publishers or anywhere where they want you to pay them to publish or fix your book. Look up Predators and Editors at www.SFWA.org.

Keep writing.

Good luck.

Try viewing a web site for a book publishing company you know. Don't know any? Look at some of the companies who published some of your favorite books. Then select the one you like the most :)

1. Write a book that's actually worthy of someone's attention.

2. Get an agent.

3. Send the transcript to every company and their mothers.

4. Burn the rejection letters for warmth as you slowly realize getting published isn't so easy.
