is it still profitable to open a video rental store?

It depends on location. My best friend just bought a video store in Knoxville Tn. She pays about 1300.00 a month for the building lease and you have to figure your overhead such as utilities, buying movies and paying employees. She said it was better to run the store yourself and cut cost as much as possible. she said summertime is very slow but most profit is made during rainy days and winter. She bought the store for 79,000.00 and the loan pmt is 2000.00 a month. she told me that most of the stores profit is from renting and selling adult movies....she doesnt like the idea but it makes money. You can buy these films for $2 a peice and sell them for 29.00. Last weekend she made a total of 1300.00 in 2 nights. It is a risky venture but if you have a great location and can get your building lease pmt reasonable you can make it work. Hope this info helps.

Even the biggies like hollywood , blockbuster , and York are being given fits by cable buy on demand , netflix and others that deliver to your door . I have not rented a movie in years after I found netflix and now that cable has had movies on demand I have not used netflix in 2 years . Technology is gonna put them all out . Porn will always sell as others have said though but you can get them on the net for next to nothing and mailed right to your house .Most companies today are getting away from the bricks and mortars business due to tax increases , people driving less, utility bills skyrocketing out of sight ,and maintenance on the property not to mention the rent/ mortgage . Bad business to be in but will get worse I fear . Good luck .

Every movie renter that I know either uses Netflix or downloads their movies. (If they're renting porn, they're not telling me about it.) Unless you are willing to sell/rent porn, as the other answerers said -- it probably isn't very profitable anymore.
