My company offers sick time to their employees, but they really don't tell you about it. They don't tell you that you have X number of sick days because they really don't want people to use them. You can't cash them out or anything like that, they are just there if you need them and if you don't thats even better for them. I have worked for this company for 4 years and have used a total of 2 or 3 sick days. Last week I injured my knee and it became swollen and filled with fluid. Since it has not gone down I made an appointment with an orthopedic doctor for this Friday. My schedule is not set, but I work 40 hours every week. Because I made this appointment they were only able to schedule me 36.5 hours. Do you think I should be able to get sick time for the other 3.5 hours that I am missing? I wouldn't ask for sick time for an annual exam or regular dental exam, but this seems different to me because it is for an injury.

My company keeps us better informed of our sick pay hours, and we have to use them in four hour increments, or roughly half a day. I would speak to your payroll department to inquire if they are able to offer you half a sick day. I think this is not too unusual of an arrangement. Otherwise, you should inform your supervisor of your intent to take the whole day off for doctor's appointment and you can take the entire day in sick pay.
