Start with some wood. Maple, Hickory, Oak, and many others will work well. Keep in mind you want "green wood", for some things, and cured wood for others.
Go out and buy a table saw, band saw, jointer/planer, oscillating spindle sander, mortising machine, tenoning jig, router &bits, steaming equipment, and some miscelanious hand tools.
Use them for five or ten years, then copy your favorite chair.

I forgot the spoon shaped draw knife for carving the seat.
