I know it has something to do with Sauron's lifeforce because he is the only one who can hold it without becoming invisible, but I can't figure it out.

The Ring actually transposed its wearer into the "shadow world" where the Sauron and the Ringwraiths held complete power...which is why they could actually see Frodo when he wore it, and he could see them.

Invisibility is only one of the powers inbued in the Ring, but Sauron was the only one who could truly wield its full potential without becoming enslaved to its evil (since it was merely a part of himself) Anyone else who attempted to wear the ring could only use the most basic of its powers.

Sauron could control the power of the ring, and Frodo hadn't mastered it's power.
