per diem, means by the day, on call is just that...you can be called at any moment and at any time.

Per diem means you are working on a daily basis with a set allowance of funds to work with for daily living expenses.
On call means you are not working in teh office but must be available for work 24 hours a day.

PER DIEM IS PAID BY THE DAY. ON CALL IS A VERY MINIMUM AMOUNT OF PAY FOR BEING AVAILABLE TO WORK. WHEN YOU WORK PER DIEM--YOU ACTUALLY WORK THAT DAY.

Per diem means you fill in the schedule where you are needed and your not guarented a certain amount of hours.On call means they call you to come when some one has called in sick and need you to fill their spot ..Not much advance notice.
Scheduling means you are usually guarented a certain amount of hours per week and have a set schedule that you work..

per Diem is "choosing" to work, not being on staff permanently.
on call is not having a "choice", if you are on call and they need you, you must report to work, generally you are a permanent member of the staff.
