I would be surprised if your Nan had not heard about Syphilis it is probably due to syphilis, gonorrhoea and the lot being lumped together and called STD's which is confusing her.
Kings believed to suffer from Syphilis were Henry VIII, Charles II, James II, George II and William IV.
I would say "what King Henry the 8th died of nan" she will probably understand it then.

You tell her it stands for sexually transmitted disease. They used to refer to them as VD (venereal diseases) so that might be the term she's familiar with.
