My wife and I will be together 6 years when our first child is born.

A lot of people have told me that we are crazy for waiting until we are together for 6 years before starting a family.

I think its smart. Some people are married and divorce with children after 6 years, so we are probably better off than most couples.

6 years isn’t the norm now a days, but I think it’s a good amount of time, don’t you think?

How long did you wait to have your child with your partner?

I've been with my fiance since I was 14yrs and he was 15. We're now 24 & 25.

Our first child is due in a month.

The longer you're with someone, the more situations you get to deal with. It's important to see how your mate will grow and communicate in time. I think 6 years is a great amount of time. Too many people will get married in less than a year and start having babies just because they're married. I think the amount of time with that person is more important.

Good Luck to you and your wife!

It's up to you. If you have a good relationship to raise kids in then go ahead but if you want to wait, that's fine too! Do whatever you want & don't worry about what everybody else thinks.
My husband and I have been together for 8 years but only married 1 1/2 and we don't have kids yet. We wanted to enjoy "us" first because when that baby comes it's going to take up a lot of your time. We have now gotten to where we are ready to start trying. I think we've decided to start trying in March '07.
Good luck & Best Wishes!

We had our first a year after getting married, but we lived together before that. I think everyone has the right to choose when. I would have waited longer but I was older than my husband and didn't want to be an older mum. It was still the right decision for us. But if I'd met him earlier I would have waited.

I dont think its too long at all. I think its best to wait 6-7 years after you get married. Its the smartest thing for both of you. Atleast thats what i plan on doing.

I think 6 years is just fine. My husband and I have been together (not married) for 4 years... married for over a year. Theres no harm in waiting... wait 10 years if you want... its not their business.

I think it's fantastic! I came into my marriage with a child and we got pregnant 3 months after we were married. I would love to have had that wonderful "us" time...pre-kid era! I wish we would have had that time to get to know eachother and really enjoy our marriage without the stress of children. That's cool that you planned it that way, to spend those years building your relationship and actually planning for the future instead of just jumping into it. I love my family and I'm happy they are there but it would have been nice.... :)

I don't think waiting is a bad thing. My parents waited for 10 years before having kids. They got to do what was needed before the big responsibility. Because once you have kids, they are there to stay.

I was with my b/f for only a year, but I was only 13, 16, and I am expecting now at 20. But it depends on what you are comfortable with. And yes, all of my kids have the same father.
