I was uplifted till I got to the last part of the song:

You told me once dear there'd be no other,
that no one else could come between,
but now you've left me to love another,
you have broken all my dreams...

Oh no! This is and will always be 1 of the greatest love songs ever written just because it moved people along the way such as my grandparents and perhaps yours in the very early days when times were so much harder. It's somewhat like blues, or country music, they all have such great stories to tell about love and a lot of the time, Love hurts a hell of a lot!!!

In a way it both depresses me and makes me smile. My Grandfather was in his death bed at a nursing home, most of the family spent day and night there for the last 3 days until he finally passed. In the last moments of his life someone in the next room was playing a guitar and singing You are My Sunshine.

I actually heard a different version of the second verse, or maybe this is a third verse. It goes like this:

The other night dear, as i lay sleeping,
I dreamed i held you in my arms,
When i awoke dear, i was mistaken,
Then i hung my head and cried.

And it is depressing, especially since this is usually sung to ones child and the loss of a child is worse than any other loss in the world.

All I know is

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are gray
You never know how
How much I love you
Please dont take my sunshine away!!

I cant believe ther is a second part!! But ur right...it is depressing!

My three year old Grandson Isaiah used to sing me that song...he swallowed a penny and choked in his sleep. Now, when I think of this song...it just means to me that: "he did leave me and the one he left me for to love is GOD....and because I lost him...it has broken all my dreams.

It was never meant to be a mustard commercial. The song was written about lost love. If you are depressed by it then you felt what the author was feeling.

No not really. Just the past generations way of expressing themselves. Guess its called blues and meant to depress you if youve had similar experiences.

That song makes me sad, but in a sentimental sort of way. My mother used to sing it to me when I was a little girl. Now I sing it to my son.

No, it doesn't depress me. It was my Grandma's favorite song...and it brings back some really good childhood memories that I have of me and her spending time together.
