1st-scrape as much as you can from the carpet, pulling apart the nap and then vaccum well. Next put a brown paper grocery bag down and iron over it. The bag will soak it up. You will need to repeat until the wax is gone. Make sure to keep the used portions of the bag away from the carpet or you will have another mess! Best wishes!

I have done this before and it works....
First crack off big pieces of wax that are easily removed (like you haven't done this already, right?)
Gather lots of paper towels and an Iron.
Place a few paper towels flat on the wax spot. With the heat relatively low (as not to burn the paper towels or the carpet) rub the iron on top of the paper towels...the wax should gradually melt and be absorbed by the paper towels. You'll have to change out the paper towels every so often once they have absorbed all the wax they are able to. Keep repeating this until the wax is gone.
It is a bit tiedious but gets the job done.

First, you will want to remove any big chunks first, carefully, with a knife or a similar type tool, then use an iron and a plain brown paper bag to fit over wax.
Make sure there is water in the iron, turn iron to warm setting to allow for steam, place bag over wax, put iron on top of bag, wax will melt onto bag, carefully pull bag off of carpet, and wax will be gone. If not keep trying. good luck.
Just an FYI, if you should get gum on your carpet or upholstery, just rub an ice cube over it and when the gum freezes, you can pull it off, flick it off or whatever floats your boat. i was reading some of the other answers, don't use paper towels, it's a waste of paper towels, just use one plain brown paper bag, I do this at my Church quite often and it works great.

Place brown paper over the wax, with a warm (NOT HOT) iron gently warm the wax until it sticks to the brown paper. keep using fresh brown paper until the wax has completely gone. The iron need only be WARM, a hot iron may melt the carpet.
DO NOT use a cloth instead of brown paper, fibres from the cloth will become stuck to your carpet and make an even bigger mess.

You wiill have to take a butter knife and some type of carpet cleaner, pour the carpet cleaner on the spot and let it sit for about 30 minutes and then come back to it work it off with the butter knife, if that doesn't work then its probably not going to come off, candle wax is a tricky one.

I have cut the wax out of shag carpeting (this was in the early 70's) - kind of like a hair cut. Be careful if you try to "iron" or use heat to remelt the wax -- so many carpets are synthetic and may burn or melt also.

Alot of people use a can of Freeze it or the stuff you use to clean pc keyboards to freeze it,then break it loose with a stiff brush.Or,put a towel over it,and use an iron or steam cleaner to heat it up until you can do the same. And when you get it broken up and mostly gone,a lint/fuzz remover to sort of trim the carpet to get the rest out.

You can try laying a paper towel over it and running an warm dry iron over it. The wax should stick to the paper towel. If that doesn't work, try freezing it with ice and breaking it out.
