We live in the bottom of a rental house. Both apartments have seperate heating systems. The upstairs neighbors smoke but we have never smelled the smoke. Today we have vast amounts of cigarette smoke coming in through our heating vents. We have the feeling they are trying to force us to move. Can the smoke somehow get into our vents or are they up to something?

It is only coming in through the heating vents. We taped them closed and now the smell has stopped but as soon as we take the tape off it is there.

I think Jim is on the right track. Besides a puncture, its possible during a remodel someone mis-connected something, or left something hanging loose.

If not that, its possible they may have been outside near the air intake of the AC unit, smoking. That would create the problem you describe. It would also explain why you are not still smelling it (if that is the case). If it happens again, go out to the AC unit and see what you can see.

As someone else said, if it persists, this is a problem for the landlord.

They would have to be smoking in the basement in order for it to be getting in your apartment. They are definitely up to something.

ask them if they did any remodeling recently. They may have punctured a vent unknowingly

Maybe its your cat or dog sneaking smokes in the bathroom or closet...I caught my cat at it once and had to help him through the addiction with cat-nip to 'nip' it in the bud....

You are leaping to conclusions. Try to find out why it is happening first. If you discover they are up to something then hire the Mafia to bump them off and burn their bodies in the furnace.....
