Your sound card may not have the capabilties that are needed. To see which one you have, do the following:
1. Right Click on "My Computer"
2. Click on "Properties"
3. Click on the tab marked "Hardware"
4. Click on the bar marked "Device Manager"
5. Click on the + sign next to "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers".
6. Look for the entry for the sound card.
That'll give you an idea which one you have. Good luck.

DirectX probably broke, it is not likely you have really OLD sound card, there is a utility called dxdiag.exe that scans and produce any DirectX related info. DirectX software all came with it and it should run with appropriate info output regardless if you install or not, and make sure if you install it, the version is at least what's dictated as requirement by your Spelling game.
