You need a wifi network you have access too (not encrypted or if encrypted you have the key). Once in range, just go through the network settings. Most can be left at default, you just need to tell it which ESSID(network name) to connect to.

To connect to your PSP's Wi-Fi LAN Connection you need to be in certain hotspots in the area of your neighborhood. Some good hotspots are Starbucks Coffee, Library, Colleges, Junior Highs, Schools, etc. But if you want the connection within your house you do have to purchase a wireless router it's really not that expensive but you do need a DSL modem or some type of high-speed connection to do so.

you need a wireless access point. For that you need a wireless router and you need to connect the psp to that.
