In Italy where I've been, the people don't bother the government and the government don't bother the people. Given the unholy **** the UK and USA governments are bringing down round our ears, are the Italians wrong?

ive been in several smaller countries like that ... nobody messes with you on anything unless you do somthing stupid ... its refreshing actually ... americans are always touting their freedoms and rights but everybody ***** with you in america from the federal down to the local ..... and in reply to the guy up there "an armed society most definitely does not make a polite society" a moral society makes a polite society ... america is one of if not the most impolite places on earth ... rude ,pompous, stuckup, "bigshots" .... yes im american but we need to learn some manners

In southern Italy you may be right that the government don't bother the people, since the place seems to have more or less escaped the rule of law. Down there it's organised crime that bothers the people. And you have heard of the recent Italian Prime Minister who almost entirely controlled the broadcast media, kept the opposition off the air and filled the schedules with dross which made Big Brother seem like the Brains' Trust? On the domestic political level I'd still rather have the UK set-up, thanks.

You've just given the reasons why so many parts of Italy are little better than Third World sewage pits. Much of it, particularly in the south and Sicily and Sardinia, is run by criminals. Much of it's society and government are corrupt. Yes they're very wrong.

Here's a quote from one of our founding fathers that should answer your question, it does for me.
"A people who would trade liberty for safety are unworthy of either one"
Here's another thats my favorite:
"An armed society is a polite society"
