If not, what was he doing? I saw some pictures years ago that had been in a newspaper, has anyone ever seen these?

I read someplace that the catcher, Gabby Hartnett denied it until his death. I think the pitcher, Charlie Root said something about if Ruth did in fact do such a thing he would have been knocked down with the next pitch.

I don't think we can say either way. There had been a lot of trash-talking that whole Series, and there's speculation that Ruth was just pointing at Cubs' pitcher Charlie Root, not at the stands. He also said something, but nobody knows now what was said. He may even have been pointing to the Cubs' bench - that film isn't great.

Either way, I prefer the legend that he called his shot.

It's a lot more likely he was just talking trash. Ruth wasn't very professional, he was more colorful.

Only one reliever was ever credited with pitching a perfect game. That reliever was Ernie Shore. What's that got to do with Babe Ruth? Babe Ruth was the starting pitcher. He walked the first batter on four pitches and got tossed out of the game for arguing with the umpire. Shore picked the baserunner off of first and retired the next 26 batters. (Around 1990, Shore's perfect game was retracted when it was decided that a pitcher had to face 27 batters to be credited with a perfect game or no-hitter. The intent was to get rid of all of the cheap 5-inning no-hitters in the record book, but Shore's perfect game was swept out, as well).

I don't think so because accounts of the event indicate that he was simply holding up one finger as if to tell the pitcher, "One strike. You've only got one strike on me."

No, I do't think he was calling his shot, I think he was pointing at the food vendor, to let him know he wanted to suck down some more hot dogs, he was just letting him know he was out of eating ammo, and to bring some more, or he saw Superman flying, and was pointing at him. NO WAY he called his shot.

I've seen them, and I like to believe that he called his shot. One of the coolest stories in baseball history, if you ask me.
