Transmission fluid acts as a lubricant as well as a medium to transfer power from the engine to the transmission and the drive train. It does get contaminated and wear out over time, the same as engine oil. It's best to follow the maintenance schedule published by the vehicle manufacturer, and posted in your owner's manual.

Over 60% of transmission failures are due to dirty fluid (sticking valves due to gunk, etc.).

The bands need to be adjusted from time to time, so you will need to take it in every few years. But you should change the fluid every 2 years if you don't have a filter like mine that takes out ALL the impurities.

I use a Frantz (toilet paper filter element) filter to take out the solid particulates, and replace the dirt with a high quality (usually synthetic) trans fluid. I do this twice a year, though I was told once a year is sufficient.

Every 30,000kms. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, go change it now. I remember i didn't for the longest time and my trannie ended up crapping out on me in the middle of nowhere. Cost me over a grand to fix the thing (my first car, sentimental reasons instead of buying a new car).

Follow the schedule in your owner's manual unless...

... you have overheated your car,
... you have driven through high water,
... your tranny starts leaking,
... your tranny starts shifting hard or not at all.

Heat and water are the enemies of transmission fluid. Either will destroy it.

Normally no change is necessary during the life time of the car.
