How come squirrels run 3/4 of the way across the road and then turn around only to get run over?

Because God designed them to make sharp turns and unexpected maneuvers when they are being chased. That way the predators cannot get them as easily. Also they are dumb.

I think they have an instinct to run a zig zag pattern as if they are being pursued by a predator. Or they are just going back to safety.

I agree, it's not smart, from our point of view. (I'm not sure how the world looks to them.)

Then again, I can't climb a 60 foot tree in half a minute like they can. They are fun to watch in the backyard.

PS Once I ran over a squirrel in my car. I felt bad about it, but I could not stop. It was right at my wheel when I first saw it. I think it was trying to outrun the car.

I don't know for sure. The next time I almost run over one, I'll stop suddenly, get out and ask the squirrel, why did you just do that?

I always thought maaybe their buddies dared them to run out in front of moving objects, sort like some youngsters I know.
Then again it could be auditions for Insurance commercials, you get the part if you make it look dangerous and stay alive.

I will tell you if you tell me why women start their car, realize they forgot some very important thing such as a cell phone, purse, lipstick or the like. Then, jump back in the car and try to re-start the already running engine?

They don't realize there is something that might be dangerous until they are about that far, then in a panic they try to go back where it was safe a minute ago. Every animal that encounters danger trys to return to the spot they know is safe.

suicide squirrels is what I call them. They know their life sucks and they want to die as quickly as possible. My goal is to only get their lower half so other drivers and pedestrians have to see a shrieking squirrel crawling around in pain
