My screen gets these streaks and lines and little black boxes all over the screen. Some of them will stay and others just flash across the screen as I type.

Also, if I minimize the program i'm working in and then restore it to full size the streaks, lines, and boxes will go away.

either your graphics card is going out, or your monitor is about to go.

I get this sometimes too, And I find that on my PC it SOMETIMES happens after I quit a full-screen program or anyother application which uses alot of my CPU usuage (In Windows XP, Press CTL + ALT + DEL once to bring up a list of programs that are in use and to view their CPU usuage).

When the black boxes occur, they usually stay on the screen unless I restart my system. If you use a lot of full-screen programs or high-usuage programs, try to get more RAM (Buy a new memory hard drive) or it may be your monitor thats the problem. If so, find a new one. Your graphics card may be faulty and may need replacing. Either those, or your PC is really screwed.

When that happened to me, I asked a computer nerd buddy of mine to come over. Basically, open your computer, find the video card, and blow it off with a can of compressed air. He also told me that if it happened again or started happening frequently, that I could use a very fine paintbrush, to dust it off and get all the dirt out from the connections.

I asked why it does that and he claims that the dirt and dust can build up in such a way around the electronic components that it slows the heat dissipation. Once the resistors heat up and have a hard time dissipating the heat, the card doesn't translate the information as efficiently and it causes "crazy stuff to happen."

I hope that helps...

Your monitor's about to go out. Mine did that for several months, then would change colors on me. I'd see a pale pink or blue tint over the screen. At first, I'd smack it to get it to change. It'd work but sometimes come back. Finally, I'd just leave it alone. It went out 2 years ago. I replaced it with an old Packard Bell monitor from my deceased uncle's computer. Start shopping around for a new monitor now, saving the money if you can.
