To protect their feet of course. Just because they are in a chair doesn't mean they can't walk. My aunt walks only when absolutely necessary die to a severe leg problem but she always wears shoes. If they can't walk at all then they wear shoes to look totally dressed. They may also have circulation issues and have very cold feet.

Why do people who aren't in wheelchairs wear them? Protection, yes? Not just for the soles of the feet but for toes getting stubbed, hot liquids being spilled, dirt and fungus being spread.

And I've known some people in wheelchairs use their feet sometimes to push themselves along.

Also, shoes complete an outfit, don't they? Even for people in wheelchairs.

Not to sound rude because I do realize you are referencing the fact that they don't need to protect their feet, but I think they do it because it is normal in society for people to wear shoes. Also the fact that in some places they might go (mostly restaurants) it is a matter of sanitation and cleanliness, and they may not be allowed in.

Or sometimes like my grandfather the blood flow to his legs after he was run over by a car was very bad and his feet did look pretty bad (they were dying from lack of oxygen). And he wore shoes when out in public despite the fact he didn't like to wear shoes (almost no one in my family does like wearing shoes) as a courtesy to others.

Why do YOU wear shoes!? Why does anyone wear shoes!? To protect their feet, because they look good, because they can...

Just because you're in a wheelchair doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't wear shoes lady! Their feet get cold, and can be injured as well. THINK!

too keep their feet warm and protected. Also so they look normal. I mean if you are getting yourself from your chair to the toilet in a handicapped stall. sure you can do it without your legs with the rails. I would like to see you do it without your feet touching the floor though.

do you want your bare feet touching the floor in a public restroom?

Also most people in wheel chairs are not paralyzed they just either cannot walk or cannot walk for more then a few yards at a time. These people will use there feet sometime to help move the chair. Or to get in and out of a car, or to sit on the toilet.

To protect their feet from getting damaged. Typically there is not very good blood supply/return due to loss of muscle tone in the legs. Any cuts or broken bones take longer to heal. Aside and apart from those issues, why wouldn't they wear shoes, don't you? Why would you wear slippers for that matter, why not just wear socks? Hope this helps

People in wheelchairs don't spend their entire lives in their chairs. Many can move (sometimes with assistance) to a regular chair, or to a bed. And when they walk, they like to have shoes on, just like everyone else.

People in wheelchairs wear shoes so that their feet do not get cold or dirty, also to be stylish!

sadly their muscles have atrophied and they now have to get support thru the wearing of shoes. Some even feel they now have ugly feet! This can be a sensitive subject with some.

Good question!

You'd think they would sport fuzzy slippers or comfy wool socks, eh? (of course, some people in chairs CAN get up when they have to and they would want some shoes for that)
