The response from Adolfo is very accurate, with the exception of the enslavement of people. There is no historical record of enslavement in the Americas prior to the arrival of the Europeans. Although the Aztec or Mexica Empire relied in a continuous of conquest of neighboring groups and civilizations, generally, the populations were largely left unaffected. Some accounts say that the populations did pay some kind of tribute to the new theocratic government, but it was not a total European style appropriation of the labor and lives of persons. Another important difference from European Empires is that the Aztecs adopted the customs of the locals instead of destroying them to build a “new” state.

It was built on Lake Texcoco using a system of floating barges that interconnected. The present day Mexico city was built on the ruins of the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan. That is why Mexico city is sinking...it was built on top of water.
They were lead by a very powerful man....Montezuma. The Aztecs participated in human sacrifice and were a highly advanced civilization...until Hernan Cortes came and was mistaken as their god Quetzalcoatl...he then conquered them, slaughtered them and took their gold...however the gold was so heavy it drowned many of the men who were trying to swim back to their ship...some just couldn't let it go. That is where the legend of Montezuma's revenge comes from...he poisoned the water making those who are not native sick when they drink it.
here is more information and it has more links also...

Over the blood of many other enemy nations that in their recent past had subjugated them.
The Aztecs arrived in the valley of mexico when it was already occupied by other cultures, and these enslaved them. In later years they freed themselves and wandered once more in the shores of the texcoco lake, waiting for the signal that their God Huitzilopochtli had given them: An eagle eating a snake. They saw it inded but it was in the middle of the lake! The commandment of their god was to be followed so they built their city Tenochtitlan little by little, in floating Chinampas. Eventually they grew and grew conquering those same people that had once enslaved them, untill as we know hernan Cortez and his smallpocks, cannons, horses and war dogs conquered them, giving birth to the modern nation of Mexico.
I hope this is clear enough and aanswered your question. This answer is historically accurate and untainted by nationalistic or chauvinist views.

The ancient tribe come from Aztlan, at the Pacific Ocean, near the actual city of Guadalajara, they come searching the god sign of "the Eagle eating a snake", current National sign of the Mexican Republic. Before founding Tenochtitlan they had allied with the reign of Texcoco, forming a counsel of 3 consuls.
Then in 1325 was finished the city with water channels to the East, West, North and South to move the merchandise of their empire. Their "soil" was prepared with fabrics, soil, long sticks, fruit plants, to provide the people of food and raw materials.
The main activity of the Aztecs was the war...sounds familiar, and then they conquered coast to coast , from Acapulco to Veracruz ; Guadalajara to Panama territories.
In one of their prophecies, they saw the return of Quetzalcoatl, with brilliant images...like the Spanish soldiers and therefore they had surrender so quickly.
