Windows XP Hotfix
A hotfix is a security update that includes a vital fix or correction in software to prevent a network system from being compromised and loaded with malicious code.

When system administrators install a windows xp hotfix, their network environment is better protected against malicious attack. Hackers are continuously looking for a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system, and when Microsoft releases a windows xp hotfix, the race is on between hackers to break into a network through the vulnerability and the system administrator to use the solution to prevent hackers from attacking their networks.

A new or updated microsoft hotfix is released on the second Tuesday of each month, known as Patch Tuesday. Shavlik provides a fast and easy patch management solution to help system administrators scan for and install a windows hotfix on the same day it is available from Microsoft.

Leave Windows Hotfixes alone - they are useful.

The best way to speed up your PC is to go to

Start > Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes).

Select the "startup" tab and click the "disable all" button.

Now select the "services" tab, tick the box marked "Hide all Microsoft Services" and click the "disable all" button again.

Click "apply" and click "ok". Restart your computer.

This will switch off any programs loading automatically when Windows starts (including your anti-virus software - so don't forget to reinstall it).

How this helps.

I think hotfix is usually associated with the microsoft .NET framework usually used by the messenger programs and/or other programs. You can uninstall it if you like, but keep in mind that your messenger (and other programs) may be affected by it. A better alternative would be to clean out your history and temporary files from internet explorer (Tools, internet options from within internet explorer) and get yourself a good cleanup utility like Norton Systemworks 2006 that has Norton Cleanup. You could also try uninstalling any unnecessary programs and organizing your personal files. Good Luck.

As others have pointed out Windows Hotfix is an application used by Windows Update to patch your version of Windows on the fly, you can close it but it will just restart itself when Windows Update does another check for updates from Microsoft.com

If you're having really serious performance issues and you're wanting to save a little money you could try switching to other operating systems, we've got a very old IBM Aptiva K6-350Mhz machine here and it runs a version of Linux called "Ubuntu" really well and further more strangely for a build of Linux it's really easy to use, even as a Mac user I have to compliment Ubuntu on the quality of it's user-experience.

Anyway, you can download it for free from http://www.ubuntu.com and you can even try it out as the CD you download can be booted from so you try without changing a single thing on your PC.

You won't really succeed in speeding your PC up like that. It's kind of like throwing a tissue out of the window of a car to reduce the weight. Buy a computer with a faster processor and more RAM.
