They both have their places cemented in history, but I would have to take Jerry Rice. He is the greatest receiver ever and is number one in receptions (1,549), receiving yards (22,895), receiving touchdowns (197), yards from scrimmage (23,540) and total touchdowns (208). He has more receiving yard than anyone else has yards from scrimmage.

Emmit Smith played with my boys from Dallas, but between those 2 i'd have 2 go with Jerry Rice.

Ask this in 20 years and people will not even know who Emmit Smith is. Jerry Rice will remain legendary.

Jerry Rice may be the greatest football player of all-time. Emmit Smith is not even the greatest running back of all-time.

Wow, a great question. Jerry Rice was pretty much unstoppable in his prime and he had a lot of great years. Emmitt Smith was a punishing runner who could also outrun most defensive players. I think perhaps Jerry Rice was better because of the big play nature of so many of his catches. Emmitt had a lot of long runs in his career, but Jerry made catches that hurt teams very badly over and over again. My answer-Jerry Rice by a few inches.

Jerry Rice... Emmitt was great, but his overall numbers are due in part to longevity and health. If Barry Sanders had played as long as him, Sanders would probably be the all-time leading rusher. The same could be said about several other RB's as well. Rice, on the other hand, has records that won't be touched for years, if ever, and he's WAY better than anyone else to have ever played his position. With all of that being said, I personally liked Emmitt better than Rice...

That's not a fair question....but I like WRs more, especially ones that aren't total a$$holes, and I hate the Cowboys but have to respect Smith's skills...but I have to pick Jerry Rice.

thats a stupid question its impossible to answer that thay play differant positions jerry a wideout catches the ball emmitt a rb runns the ball but if ur looking at who had the better career its jerry there equal in superbowles but jerry has records that are not as aptainable as emmitt emmittes all time rushing record will be destroyed by the time LT, james, portis, cadillac, benson, retire just to nam a few that have a good shot but jerry rices alltime recieving record not many are close to it and but there are a few that are on pace like boldin or clayton but they have to stay healthy to reach it.

No Brainer. It's Rice. Look at the gap between Rice and the second best receiver in almost any category, then do the same at running back. Rice laps everyone.

you can't compare them. different possions. RB vs Wr. both talented smith was faster, but rice had the best hands of any wr in the 1980's maybe ever. I think Barry Saunders was better than smith. Saunders could get through any hole in the line no matter the size. he was great.
