The prefix "pro" in Latin has two meanings: "for" and "forward". The prefix "con" also has two meanings (in different circumstances), either "against" as in "contradict" (literally: "to speak against") or "together" as in "congress" (literally: "to come together") or "convoke" (literally: "to call together"). In this case the "pro" in "progress" means forward, so "progress" means "to go forward", and therefore the opposite is "regress" (literally: "to go backwards").
