I am not trying to get a fake degree. I am college educated. I am a hiring manager at a national, well known company and an employee I hired passed our background check two years ago. Someone recently overheard a conversation where the employee admitted to having a fake degree.

We pay top dollar for our reference checks, but somehow this one fell through. Was it because they didn't do their job or the fake degree was a good one? I don't know.

As a hiring manager, I personally run into two types of degree fraud

One is an outright lie that they attended the college. The other is that they would lie on the nature of of their degree (claim Masters when actually a BA, or Engineering instead of Business major)

I've found that some well placed questions help sort out the casual liars, such as "What were your favorite classes, and why?",or "Who was your favorite teacher, and why?" or "How do you think that your (degree-related) class will help you in this job?". Quite frequently, applicants don't anticipate that depth of question, and it shows when they attempt to answer.

For the more sophisticated liars, you need to check with the university directly, or offer to reimburse the applicant for a certified copy of transcripts or diploma. But be sure to verify the type of degree, not just the existence of one.

Not only will a competent employer find out the diploma's real worth, if you claimed a degree you did not earn in application, you could be prosecuted for fraud. An application is a legal document, and somewhere, there is place where you signed, attesting that everything in that document is true.

Most likely scenario is that they won't hire you. End of Story. More risky, for you is if you actually get placed and are found out later. THAT is where corporations get angry and tend to prosecute. You see, by the time an person gets placed, the company will have already invested time and effort in that person. Time = money!

In all, the risk isn't worth it. I have NEVER run across anyone who gained a professional level position with a fake degree.

The only ones I have heard of have been in connection with some spectacular crashes, in the media and jail time.

I suppose you're talking about a diploma to show a prospective employer. It's just a worthless piece of paper. If the prospective employer performs a simple background check at the college your fake diploma supposedly comes from, he will quickly detect the fraud.

If you're referring to a genuine degree from a fake college (a diploma mill) where you can buy a degree based on some made up criteria... a quick check of the fake college's accreditation will also detect the fraud.

If the prospective employer is too stupid to perform these simple checks, he gets the employee he deserves!!

College degrees are the easiest thing for a human resources person to verify. If they actually check, they'll find out the degree you're claiming is fake. All they have to do is call the school and ask if you received a degree. If you aren't on record as having received a degree, the school will say so. For my last job, I actually had to bring in my diploma in person so they could make a copy of it for my personnel file.
