The car suddenly started running rough, bogging down and noisy with what sounds like backfiring through the intake manifold on acceleration. Check engine light on. Took it to AutoZone and the diagnostic was 106, 1 of 3 air flow etc. Checked for leaks in airtake manifold thing, tightned clamps, listened for leaks etc. Replaced plugs, MAP sensor, air filter and serpentine belt. Put in premium gas. This made no difference. Now it's knocking on idle also. Thought maybe carbon build up as it hasn't been on highway in 6 months, just city driving. Had a few people listen to it and w/ all different opinions...rod knock (would it backfire?) rocker arm, timing...I'm going to take it to a shop but I don't want to get ripped off and if I can would like to repair it myself. Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Correct, no timing belt, it has timing chain. What sucks is my Cavalier is only 10 years old, have had 9 years and preventative maintenance has been faithfully done and I had to replace the trans four years ago. what a lemon!

Replace the timing belt, because that could cause serious damage to the engine. I'm not exactly sure what it does, but i know that my car [92' Mazda 929] Needs the belt to be replaced every something miles, or serious engine problems, including overheating, could occur. So make sure that's working right before you do anything drastic.

Then bypass to a elements save and they are going to employ you a timing person-friendly frequently providing you with back your deposit once you come the device. seem in the guide on your certain engine and keep on with timing thoughts, it does sound as inspite of the undeniable fact that the timing is out some teeth likely why it grow to be parked in the first position. so some distance as your empty tank being complete of sparkling gas, in case you probably did not sparkling the tank out then because it grow to be empty it grow to be able to rust in a a lot broader section inspite of the undeniable fact that the gas clear out, if it grow to be also replaced, might want to provide up lots of the trash it is the plugging up that you've gotten to rigidity about. well since my memory isnt the best, i dont believe this vehicle has a timing belt. it should have gears instead. this isnt going to be easy but i believe you have either flatened a lob on the cam or busted a timing gear and now everything is out of whack. sounds like you might need a new engine which ever way you look at it. sorry

Sounds like a computer problem. Usually reliable. 100 bucks for the computer, then labor on top. Good luck.

This sounds like your timing is off. It happened to a car I had, and once I had it adjusted, it was fine.
