i'm currently writing a script for an extremely low budget project in west africa schedule for sometimes in April 2008. Since i have no clue about the dynamics of directing a film, i'm already talking to a director who has agreed to direct the movie while i act as the assistant director. However, all my friends here in the states are saying I should be able to direct the film myself since i imagined the scenes and wrote the script.
How do you think i can learn the few techniques that will help me direct the film.

Pls: keep in mind that the low budget project can not be compared to hollywood professional standard.

Since you have no experience directing, I would go with the ASSISTANT director's role for your film. This will serve you well for three reasons. One, you will have to opportunity to learn the ins and outs of directing from a "pro" which will be to your advantage on any future projects and your career. Two, the learning experience will also help you in writing future scripts because you'll be more technically skilled in the production aspects. And three, you will, as the writer, be able to help the director realize your vision without the pressures of all the many director's responsibilities. All the best to you with your film!

Best way to learn, if you have no experience directing, is to let the guy direct and you act as assistant. Watch and learn, then tackle the next film on your own.

Go to the public library. Seriously, there are tonnes of books you can read, that'll teach you about framing, composition, lighting, and all the terminology you'll ever need.

I'm suggesting a book, since you can carry it around with you and reference it and make notes while you're watching other films.

Dart around suspiciously while humming the theme from "Mission: Impossible."
