Well, they will either be doing a pelvic exam, or a pap test, or maybe both. Depending, the Dr. may or not put his fingers inside you. (You will be laying on the table with your feet in "stirrups", little peddles for your feet, and asked to slide down to the end of the table, and spread your legs first, of course.) Sometimes they use a long cottons swab, like a Q- tip, only longer, if they need a sample, and smear that on a microscope slide. Depending on what they're doing, they may put this cold metal thing in your coochy, (I think it's called a speculum?) and then they open it up, it holds your vagina open, so they can see things, and take samples if they need to. It can be mildly uncomfortable, but should not cause severe pain. Again, depending on what they do, you may bleed a little bit for a day or two, just a little, not a big deal. They will supply you with a pad or tampon, if this occurs. It helps best to just close your eyes, and relax, and take a mini-vacation, like you're not even there. Above all just relax, your Dr. has done this at least 100 times, and we've all had our first visit somewhere. The main thing to remember, is that you are doing this for your health, and it is necessary for maintenaning a healthy female reproductive system. You'll be fine! there is no getting around the embarrassment unfortunately, but you may find that you're more comfortable w/a woman instead of a man. at least i feel that way. i feel better knowing there is someone there with the same equipment as me and who knows what it's like to be a woman in the same situation. also, take comfort in the fact the whole process takes all of 5 minutes and most of the time they aren't "down there".

They will most likely do a PAP if this is your first visit >swab< to see if there are any problems, discuss birth control, risks, etc. They'll go from there. Good luck & dont sweat it too bad!

you will be lying down and the doctor will be givin you a pap test try to relax and enjoy the inspection good luck!
